Google Rich Cards expand to local restaurants and online courses

google-data-tech-analytics3-ss-1920

Google has announced they have added two new flavors of rich cards for their search results, local restaurant and online courses.

You can see these richer search results by searching for [best New Orleans restaurants] and [leadership courses], for example. These rich cards are contain a new user interface, such as “carousels that are easy to browse by scrolling left and right, or a vertical three-pack that displays more individual courses,” Google added.

Here are screen shots of these two types of new rich cards:

google-rich-cards-restaurantsgoogle-rich-cards-courses

And if you go with AMP HTML for the these two new verticals, Google said it will bring a faster user experience. Google does recommend AMP here but says it is currently not required. Here is a screen shot of how that experience is with AMP:

Google updated their technical documentation around implementing these rich cards, which some spotted the other week.

DC Gaming podcast: Hippe haxxorz

As usual.

Google Maps adds a live view for popular times at venues

google-world-maps5-ss-1920

Google announced they have expanded their popular times feature within Google Maps to show you a live view of the data. Google Maps now will tell you how busy or slow a specific venue is in real-time.

Google said they have added a “real-time look at how crowded a place is right now, to help you decide where and when to go.”

The GIF below shows a red live indicator icon that shows the real time data with an option to mark if it is correct or not.

livedata

Google orginally added the popular times feature in July of 2015 and then also added shortly after how long people stay in that venue.

This new view gives you an actual real-time view of that, which is important for holiday shopping.

In addition, Google will also show you the business hours of stores within stores. So if you run a store like CVS and there is a pharmacy in the story, you can list both the normal store hours and the pharmacy hours.

Setting SEO KPIs for small manufacturing websites

website-design-ss-1920

For many people outside of marketing, Google Analytics can quickly become overwhelming. This is particularly true for the owners of small manufacturing firms. Without the time and resources to properly understand and use the vast amount of data in Analytics, many small manufacturers simply look at top-line traffic as evidence their website is “working.”

The reality, however, is more nuanced. It’s not so much that small manufacturers don’t understand how to analyze the data available, but that they often don’t know what to measure — especially if they’re not involved in selling parts or services online.

With an e-commerce website, it’s fairly easy to see if the marketing program is working or not: you simply look at daily or weekly sales.

For manufacturers, with their small, information-only websites, “pageviews” and other similar data points mean nothing when the end-all-be-all metric they care about is inquiries.

To help solve this problem, my company has worked over the last year to develop meaningful KPIs (key performance indicators) for our small manufacturing clients. While SEO is usually the primary focus of an online marketing strategy, we also work to integrate other tactics (whether it’s an e-newsletter, a print ad campaign or a trade show), and then show how these tactics result in inquiries over time.

What follows is the process we use to set up and measure the KPIs for an SEO marketing program — but any small business can use this process for any marketing tactic or channel.

Step #1: Determine what will be measured (KPIs)

A well-thought-out SEO program can meet several marketing objectives — including increasing awareness of the company and educating buyers — which help drive inquiries. Here are some of the things a small manufacturer can measure as part of the SEO marketing program.

Request for quotation (RFQ) form completions. This is one of the easiest KPIs to measure because you can export the form data from a CMS such as WordPress and then analyze it. Even better, you can get richer data by tracking the KPI in Google Analytics. To do this, create a thank-you page that people will see once they click the “submit” button on the form. You can use this page as your Analytics Goal (Figure 1).

analytics-goals

Figure 1: RFQ thank-you page Goal

Setting up a simple Goal like this gives you a great deal of other information in Analytics, such as which marketing channels assist or result in Goal completions (Figure 2) or how many sessions it takes for people to get to conversion.

last-click-data

Figure 2: Multi-Channels Funnel report showing Last Click or Direct Conversions

Inquiry calls and emails. RFQ forms are good, but for two of our clients, the majority of inquiries come in by email, and some by phone. This is why it’s critically important that owners of small firms train customer service and sales people to record all inquiries.

To track inquiries, we recommend using a simple Google spreadsheet. Why? Because it’s easy to set up and use, and because if the company doesn’t have a CRM (some smaller firms don’t), it’s the best way for more than one person to view and track information.

Without an inquiry spreadsheet, we and the client lack specifics on how inquiries are coming in. One client, for example, received 21 inquiries for the period August–October: 15 of these came in through email and phone; the remaining six came in through the RFQ form.

Seeing data like this helps clients better understand their sales process, and it helps us ensure the website provides a smooth and intuitive user experience with regard to how prospective buyers contact the company.

Closed sales by channel. In order to determine if SEO is driving the right kind of inquiries, it helps if the manufacturer, when tracking inquiries, also tracks the source of the inquiry — something you don’t always know if the prospect emails or calls the company directly.

For smaller companies, “closing the loop on sales” is relatively easy. The person handling inside sales can simply ask, “How did you hear about us?” and then note this on the inquiry spreadsheet.

Traffic data. While traffic is important in determining if an SEO program is working, it’s also important that clients better understand what’s behind this data. This because it’s possible to have high traffic, but not the right kind of traffic (e.g., spam, people looking for something not related to the business). Some of the things we like to track and measure are:

Filtered data — For all clients, we create filtered views of the website property while also making sure bot filtering is turned on to weed out referral spam (which used to be a huge problem for smaller websites, as it really skewed the data). Landing pages — Are people finding the content we’re creating and optimizing? Conversions by channel — Which channels, search, direct, referrals, email drive conversions (Figure 3)? Referrals — If we’ve been working on a PR campaign or creating inbound links, is this work paying off?
goal-completions

Figure 3: Goal Completions by Channel

Step #2: Set a baseline and targets

A baseline is the starting point for what you’ll be measuring. Targets are the goals you want to achieve: a 20 percent increase in website sessions, inquiries and so forth.

To set the baseline for SEO KPIs, you can use data from the previous three, six or 12 months (depending on how much data you have).

What if you don’t have any data? That’s fine — it simply means you’re starting from scratch — which was the case for one of our clients. In this situation, we determined the company’s KPIs, set up Goals in Google Analytics, and then let things run for three months. We then used this data as the baseline for the next quarter targets.

Step#3: Determine how you will measure and when

Tracking the ROI of an SEO program generally involves Google Search Console and Google Analytics. For smaller manufacturers or businesses, looking at Analytics every day is like looking at the stock market — and then reacting to every hiccup.

Instead, pick a specific period of time you’ll analyze, such as monthly, every other month or quarterly, and then measure and analyze your results. You can create a simple KPI chart, and then fill in the boxes (or do whatever works for you).

kpi-chart

As an aside, we like to look at Search Console at least a couple of times a month just to be sure site health is good and that the site hasn’t seen any warnings or other obvious issues.

Step #4: Create the marketing strategy

To properly measure an SEO program, it pays to develop a strategic marketing plan that ties into the company’s business objectives. The written strategy should include:

target audience; industry overview; competitive analysis; outline of the sales process, sales cycle and sales challenges; marketing tactics in play or the ones you want to add; KPIs, how you’ll measure them and your goals for the next 12 months and so on; and marketing calendar.

Having a written strategy gives a small business two main benefits: 1) You have a marketing roadmap of what tactics will be implemented and when; and 2) when a new opportunity presents itself (or when something comes along that sounds too good to be true), you can refer back to the plan to see if the opportunity fits with the strategic direction.

By having the strategic plan in place, it’s very easy to ignore unimportant opportunities (to quote the late Steve Jobs).

Step #5: Work on one thing at a time

Just as you focus on one productivity or process improvement in your manufacturing plant, focus on improving one KPI at a time. For example, it can take some experimentation to find the right keywords or the type of content that draws in website visitors — the kind that convert and become inquiries. Once you have one thing figured out and working smoothly, then tackle the next one.

In conclusion

Before embarking on any type of SEO or marketing initiative, small manufacturers should first decide which KPIs will be measured and how they’ll be measured. Create a KPI chart or other recording mechanism, and then consistently track and measure results that mean something to you and your business.

By having KPIs in place, you give your marketing direction and focus — and you give yourself the ability to make decisions based on data rather than hunches, guesses or industry hype.

Google Home Services Ads roll out on mobile

Google’s home services ads are finally showing on mobile. The ads for local service providers such as locksmiths, plumbers, handymen and, more recently, HVAC services and electricians, had been briefly spotted last month on mobile, but they now appear to be prevalent across the California markets where the program is active.

The mobile ad format features a swipeable carousel of listings that feature a map of the service area where the advertiser operates. Here are examples on iOS (left) and Android.

google-home-services-ads-mobile-11-21-16

Because the businesses typically cover the entire metro area, the maps are identical in most of the ads. An exception, shown in the screen shot on the right below, is somewhat confusing. The same area is covered by both advertisers, but it is just slightly different; however, it’s not clear what the differences are without having to click through on both.

Google appears to be testing the service area format on desktop as well. Below is a comparison of two formats seen today. The first is the format that has been running for some time, which includes thumbnail head shots of the service providers. The result for “San Diego plumber” shows the service area format. The map reflects the service area covered when you hover over each ad.

The other update is the inclusion of a “Google guaranteed” tag in each the ads. Spotted by The SEM Post, the verification tells consumers, “This pro is backed by the Google guarantee, which means they’re licensed, insured and pre-screened. Any job you book with them is guaranteed to be done right or your money back.” To participate in the Home Services Ads program, advertisers must go through a background check and verification process.

These ads are now set to dominate the above-the-fold real estate on both mobile and desktop results. In most cases, the organic local pack appears below the Home Services Ads block and one or two text ads.

ING neemt afscheid Twyp in Nederland

3 next-level Yelp tricks for business owners

yelp-black-slant-1920

I’m always on the lookout for interesting tips, tricks and strategies that marketing managers and business owners can use to improve their Yelp pages. From dissecting Yelp’s own videos about their product, to building detailed review analysis, to straight up asking Yelp for clarification on their mixed messages, I’m on the hunt for every little edge I can find.

Yelp is far more complex than it seems on the surface. Following are three great tricks that you can use to take advantage of the nuances of Yelp to improve your Yelp page(s).

Yelp calculator

A big difference between Yelp and Google Reviews is that Yelp rounds to half-star increments, and Google does not round (though they do use complex Bayesian averaging). So, on Google, you can have a 4.1, 4.2 and so on. But on on Yelp, you can only have a 4.0 or a 4.5, and nothing in between.

Because of this, you never quite know where you stand on Yelp. Are you a solid 4, just about ready to jump up to a 4.5, or teetering on the edge of dropping to 3.5? So should you be excited or scared? Yelp doesn’t make it clear.

To help bring some clarity and help you test out different scenarios, you can use this Yelp Improvement Calculator. This lets you enter in your current rating distribution, and then it lets you know what it will take to get to various higher star ratings. You can also tweak your rating distribution to see if you could potentially be close to dropping to a lower rating.

yelp-calculator

Yelp review removal video

Yelp has a very strict set of content guidelines. These guidelines provide a lot of detail on what a reviewer is allowed and not allowed to do. If you are a business owner, commit these content guidelines to memory. Yelp allows you to flag reviews that violate these guidelines, so if you know the rules, you can flag any negative reviews you see and have them removed.

There are a lot of rules, and it can be a lot to remember, so my colleague Daniel Russell recorded a video to break down the common content guideline violations. This helps make it clearer what you can flag for removal. Don’t underestimate the power of flagging — we’ve improved clients’ pages by half and full stars, simply by removing the reviews from their page that violated the content guidelines.

Find the profile of a filtered/not-recommended reviewer

On Yelp, nothing is more frustrating for business owners than the filter. The filter sometimes sucks in great five-star reviews that you would love to have. As I mentioned in a previous article, for any positive review that is filtered, you can do the following:

If you can identify the customer who left a positive review in the filter, you can reach out to them and let them know their great review is being hidden because they aren’t active on Yelp. Additionally, you (and other employees) can add them as a friend and mark their reviews as useful and cool.

Here’s the problem: For any review that is in the filter, Yelp does not provide a link to the reviewer’s profile. It also doesn’t show the useful/funny/cool buttons. So it makes it impossible to interact with the reviewer, follow them or mark their reviews

Now here’s the solution: Dig into the code on the page a tiny bit and you can find the information needed to access their profile. Follow the instructions below, and you’ll be able to rebuild a link to the user’s profile to access it. Hooray!

First, open up the filter (not-recommended list) by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking the arrow next to “not currently recommended.”

not-recommended-1

Scroll/page through the filtered reviews to find the review/person whose profile URL you’d like to find. Highlight their name, right-click, and click “Inspect” (I do this in Chrome, but you might be able to tweak this for other browsers).

not-recommended-2

Now, this next step may look daunting if you aren’t used to digging into code, but it is easy, trust me. Chrome should show you a little window of code. Look for the last “<li>” in the area of code it is showing you. Now, look at the line of code under it, all the way to the right. You should see something that says “user_id:______.” Everything following the colon, up to the end quotation, is the magic ID you need, so highlight that and copy it.

not-recommended-3

Last step! I usually just open another tab and go to any other user’s profile that I can access. Then I just delete the existing User ID in the URL and plug in what I copied. Hit enter and voila! You are on that reviewer’s profile. You can now mark their review as useful and cool, follow them, compliment them and so on.

not-recommended-4

There you have it. Three of my favorite Yelp tricks that I hope you use as part of your arsenal to increase your Yelp score and bring in more business. If you find these helpful and really want more, check out my previous article that contains some useful Yelp tidbits, “5 Yelp Facts Business Owners Should Know (But Most Don’t).”
